Spring Updates from SCS

Sunset Gala 2019 a Whopping Success!  Last Saturday night over 100 people gathered at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth to celebrate our school and support three wonderful programs during our largest fundraiser of the year.  A good time was had by all as we offered free "Sunset Cocktails", had fun with the silent auction, rocked the Live Giving Event, and even set a record in the crowdsourcing fundraiser.  The final tally for the night is not in yet, but we can safely say that the spirit of giving was in full force, and the willingness to help fantastic!  THANK YOU to everyone who came including volunteers, donors, friends, and family!

All SCS Programs Closed on April 19th:  Please remember all SCS programs including all PEAK sites, Starfish preschool, and the Meadows Preschool will be closed on Friday, April 19th for our Professional Development Day.

National Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week April 22-26:  Of course this celebration would happen during vacation week when our PEAK staff are working with your kids for full days!  Please take a moment to thank the teachers who work tirelessly with the children at each of the sites during this week.  They are dedicated to making your child's afterschool experience educational, fun, interactive, and meaningful.

Practice Evacuation of the Campus and ECE Classes - May 2nd:  The SCS Emergency Management Plans include procedures for all kinds of potential crises - including the full evacuation of the Campus Building and grounds if need be.  Fire drills are a monthly occurrence here, and yet we have not practiced a full evacuation in a while - but now we will.  Fortunately, with an arrangement made with nearby St Patrick Academy, we will be able to evacuate to a safe and secure building a short walk away, and return within the hour.  The drill will occur on May 2nd, 9:30-10:30am, and we will remind you as we get closer.

SCS Spring Art Show is Wednesday May 8th:  You may have heard directly from the classes that the yearly SCS Art Show is just around the corner - and we are all excited!  Kids of all ages (from infants to older PEAKers) will be producing wonderful works of art and displaying them at Community Campus from 5:30-7:00pm that evening for everyone to enjoy.  All families from all programs (ECE and PEAK) are invited to the event.  Light refreshments will be served, and some of the art will be auctioned off to support classes.

Enrichment Committee Looking for Vols:  Are you a connected person in the Portsmouth area?  Are you interested in helping SCS bring in new and exciting presenters for ECE and PEAK?  Could you give one hour per month of your time to help our school be more diverse, more exciting, and more enriched?  Then please contact Enrichment Committee Chair Meaghan Cullinane at 603-969-6427 to volunteer!  We need your help now!

"Acceptance" Theme Day April 9th:  The C.A.R.E.S.Values that we live by at SCS provide our school with a theme focus each year and for 2018-19 it's "Acceptance".  On April 9th we will be celebrating this theme in all our classrooms and programs during Acceptance Theme Day.  There will be a special assembly featuring Lindsay and her Puppets, special lunch offerings, and lots of focus on how we all can be more accepting of other people, cultures, beliefs, etc.  Join us by having conversations with your children about the importance of Acceptance in their lives.

Possible Elimination of Funding for Afterschool Programs: Some of you may have heard the news of our current administration's plan to eliminate government afterschool and summer program funding. The biggest proposed cut is to the 21st Century Grant Funds.  Currently about 1.7 million families rely on this funding for both after school and summer care.  I ask and encourage you to click on the link below and follow the easy steps that will send an e-mail to our state representatives urging them to fight against this proposed cut. ECE and School Age care is immensely important (as you all are aware). Together our voice can make a difference! Please help us underscore the importance of this continued after school funding.   http://www.afterschoolalliance.org/
